Five guys…one passion…one vision. Saved by Skarlet was founded about seven years ago by Nate and Matt Middleton in Rhode Island. Nate is currently the lead singer/rhythm guitarist, Matt is the lead guitarist, and accompanying them on this journey is Adam on drums, Ben as featured screamer, and Evan on rhythm guitar.
But where did the name Saved by Skarlet come from? I got the chance to talk to the guys and ask this question. Watch the clip below to see what they had to say!
They have been hustling and playing many shows to network and grow their reach. When asked what they would want people who have never heard of them to know, the response was that the personal investment and emotional intimacy of their music sets them apart.
While the band is still working their way to the top, they have gotten the opportunity to play with some great bands such as The Veer Union, The Protest, Spoken, and Set for the Fall. So who would they collaborate with if they had the chance? The answer was Skillet and Red as those two bands influenced them and they feel that the musical styles are so similar. I believe anything is possible so there is a good chance that one day that will happen…hint hint John Cooper.
I always like to get to know individuals better so I asked each of the guys to give me a random fact about themselves. Here is what they said!
Nate – “I really like video games” Matt – “I love working on cars and doing auto body stuff.” Adam – “I do a whole lot of theater and am into musical theater and acting.” P.S. He also loves One Direction. Ben – “I am a huge underground closet dungeons and dragons nerd.” Evan – “I like anime.”
SBS just recently released their new album “Out of Darkness” which you can find on all streaming platforms. Be sure to check it out and give them feedback on what you think! It was so great to talk to these guys so make sure to give them a like on Facebook and follow what they have going on!
I just want to start off by saying that there are some good bands out there, and then there are some great bands out there. If you have not yet heard of or listened to The Anchor then you are missing out on one of the great bands. So who is this band that I think is so great and why are they this months artist?
Hailing from Denver, The Anchor is fronted by Linzey Rae (star of Metal Kitchen on Youtube) along with Keenan, Cory, Adam, and Ryan on bass, guitar, drums, and guitar respectively. This metalcore group puts on a hell of a show which is high energy and very entertaining to watch. They have been rocking the scene for the last 5 years and are currently signed to Manic Kat Records. In December 2016, The Anchor released their first full-length album, A World Ahead, which charted #7 on the metal iTunes charts. After signing with Manic Kat Records, The Anchor released their next EP, Make it Last, in February 2018. Following the EP release, Make it Last charted #19 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, #11 on the iTunes Alternative chart, and #99 on the iTunes New Release chart. The group is currently in the process of recording a new album titled “Breathe”. Below is the music video for the song Revive which is off of the upcoming album.
Off their facebook page, their story states “We write music with the objective of providing an uplifting message, while promoting the value of self worth. Knowing firsthand the refuge that music can offer away from life’s struggles, we hope to be a voice of understanding and provide a place that someone can call their home. This is yours just as much as it is ours.”
This fall The Anchor hits the road with A War Within for a US/Canadian tour so if they are coming to a city near you, do not miss it!

Convictions tagline is “Aggressive Worship” and I could think of no better fitting description of their music. I hadn’t listened to this group much when my band got on a show with them and it was that point that led me to what I feel is one of the best bands out there today. I felt it was fitting to put Convictions in the spotlight as the 3 year anniversary of my favorite album “I Will Become” just passed.
In place of just giving details which you can find on their facebook page I wanted to tell a story as to why I think as many people as possible should support these guys by listening to their music, buying merch, and going to their shows. Why I believe that these guys are the real deal and aren’t just another band who says one thing but does another. In February of 2018 Convictions was on tour with War of Ages and Earth Groans (two other awesome bands). The energy they were putting off was unlike any other show I had been to. While it was a small venue the guys of Convictions played like they were in a full stadium.
Part way into their set, between songs, Mike started to talk about how none of us are alone and everyone is loved. He said none of us are cooler than anyone else in the room and we should all be there for others. Now I am just paraphrasing and I know I’m not capturing it all but what happened next I will never forget. A couple of the guys who were attending the show broke down in tears. They had recently lost a friend and what Mike was saying touched them. As they wept the rest of us in the pit gathered around and even the guys in Convictions came off stage to embrace these two and show support. I have never seen another band care about those fans who attend their show as much as the guys in this group and I don’t believe that this was a one off event for them.
These guys are out on the road loving on people and showing what its like to not just proclaim to be a christian but what its like to actually be a christian. Not judging, loving everyone, and being there for others. At the end of June they set off on another tour with the dudes in Earth Groans and it is sure to be a banger. Check their social media pages for dates and cities. Head over to their merch page and support them because they are out there making a difference!
I have been following SLY for a while and last October I finally got a chance to play a show with them and I was definitely impressed. For this reason they are in April’s artist spotlight! Hailing from Rochester NY, So Last Year is a pop rock band that has been tearing up the scene since 2013. In the past 6 years they have released two full length albums and most recently the single “Stay With Me (9°)”. If you are into bands such as Panic! at the Disco, Relient K, or Fall Out Boy, then this group of guys is for you.
SLY was founded by frontman Logan Van Epps who not only has an amazing voice but also a pretty nice head of hair. The rest of the band consists of Jay on Bass, Mitch on Drums, Jason on rhythm guitar, and Tom on lead guitar. When performing live, they put on a high energy and very entertaining show. It seems that as technology advances, many bands do not sound the same playing live as they do in their recordings but this is not true for So Last Year.
So aside from touring what does the band have planned for this year? According to a source close to the band (or in the band), in the near future SLY will be releasing a worship cover as well as another single. Make sure to follow them to keep up to date with their releases as well as upcoming shows.
Go check these guys out on social media and be sure to give So Last Year out a listen on Spotify or any other streaming platform!
I recently heard of Postcards from the Moon and my life has now been changed. First off the name is legit and I hope they have postcards with a picture of the moon at their merch table (If not you’re welcome for the idea. Send me one.). I met their bassist Gilbert at a show in Buffalo and if the rest of the guys in this group are just like he is, a whole lot of cool is coming out of San Antonio, TX. The guys just dropped a new single of their upcoming EP “Me Without You” which is set for release on April 5th. The single which is titled “Just Make Sure You’re Happy” takes me back to 2007 when I listened to Mayday Parade and Yellowcard. Between the vocals and violin I could listen to this song over and over, and to be honest I have. Since the release, it has been picked up by many outlets and was even featured by Alternative Press.
When asked about the band and their upcoming album Gilbert said “The band has been through some rough times, but this past year since March of 2018 has been nothing but hard work and dedication . I’m proud of this final product and I can’t wait for everyone to hear our stories.”
I can’t speak for everyone else but I know that I am anxiously awaiting the release of the sophomore EP from this group. Check out the video below and drop a comment on this post to let me know what you think of it! Also make sure to head over to their facebook page and give it a like to stay up to date with what they have going on!
In 2017 I was playing at Creation Festival in Mount Union, Pennsylvania. We arrived a day early and wanted to check out the Fringe stage where we would be playing. As one band finished and we prepared for the next. They loaded on and did a line check. I was definitely not expecting what I was about to be introduced too. This band took the stage with force and the energy did not stop until the set was over.
Since then I have had the opportunity to not only see them play but also share the stage with and hang out with the guys in Earth Groans. The talent these guys have is off the charts both on and off the stage. I loved their debut EP “Renovate” and once their sophomore album “Rahab” dropped, that album has been on repeat on my playlist.
Earth Groans signed with Solid State Records in 2017 and have been on some killer tours with bands such as Convictions, War of Ages, Phinehas, and My Children My Bride. I foresee big things happening for these guys as they continue to entertain not only across the country but around the world. If they come through your area you need to get to their show and get in the pit because it will be a show you do not want to miss.
Be sure to check out their social media pages and websites for news, upcoming shows, and other projects the dudes are working on.
Coming out of Mt. Vernon IL, As We Are, has been tearing up venues all across the country and encompassing the heart of a DIY band for the past 6 years. I had the opportunity to experience them live for the first time this past summer at the Kingdom Bound festival in NY as part of their Summer Tour. Their sound and live set took me back to 2007 when I was into bands such as Stellar Kart, MxPx, and Hawk Nelson. Fronted by Dale Vaughn, they are high energy and really know how to connect with the audience. The band recently signed to Raven Faith Records and re-released their self titled “As We Are” EP which includes songs such as “Promise Land” and “Wave Goodbye”. This EP and all their other music can be found on Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play, and any other music streaming sites.
As We Are is starting 2019 off with a 2 month tour, the no name tour, and will be back in the Buffalo area on January 26th at Stamps the Bar. This headlining show also features the bands Tetelestai, Among the Wolves, Element 36, and Signs of a Slumbering Beast. Make sure to check out their website and social media sites below and check back for photos and video off their upcoming tour!
